Celebrate Joaquin “Jocko” Fajardo’s Creative Legacy
Art is a common language which presents a powerful forum for self-expression and creative achievement. No one spoke this language more fluently and vibrantly than Joaquin "Jocko" Fajardo.
Joaquin Fajardo was a creative force who was loved and admired by all those who worked with him in the greater Washington area. Named one of DC's 2022 "Most Stylish" by the Washingtonian, Joaquin was not only recognized for his avant garde aesthetic, but also for his commitment to inclusivity.
DC-area philanthropists Manette and Louis Mayberg considered Joaquin more than a close friend — he was truly a member of their family. His sudden loss one year ago left a void in their home, in their hearts, and in the community. To keep his legacy alive, the Maybergs are spearheading a fundraising campaign in support of Shalva's Discovering Talent Through Rehabilitative Art Program in his honor and renaming the program Jocko's HeArt and Soul.
About Jocko's HeArt and Soul Program
Giving a Creative Voice to Children and Adults with Disabilities of All Backgrounds
When given the opportunity to tell their stories, it is amazing to see how the door opens for people with disabilities who have been socially marginalized for most of their lives. Jocko's HeArt and Soul program, based in Jerusalem, serves children and adults with disabilities — regardless of their religious or ethnic background.
One of the program's primary goals is to reveal artistic talent among children and adults with disabilities and empower them with the necessary support and tools to become renowned artists. To achieve this goal, the HeArt and Soul program provides the following:
Art therapy sessions
Professional art lessons
A creative workshop studio
Gallery exhibits which escort Shalva's program participants from early childhood through adulthood.
Naming the program in Joaquin’s memory will honor both his creative contributions to Shalva and his legacy of unity and inclusivity.
